Esperanza Plaza
1903 Third Street, Alameda
Built in the early 1970's, it is a 120-unit complex. Most units are occupied by Housing Choice Voucher holders; some units are in the Section 8 project-based program. Both programs provide a subsidy from HUD. The building and grounds include an on-site resident manager, a community room with kitchen, the "Children of the World Reading Room", well-maintained landscaping and pathways, assigned off-street parking and small recreational areas with playgrounds throughout the complex. Each unit has a patio, balcony or a full backyard.
In the past few years, Esperanza has undergone some functional and cosmetic changes.
- New backyard fences and gates were installed at every building
- New landscaping and exterior lighting were installed
- New kitchen and bathroom cabinets and counter tops were installed
- The "Children of the World Reading Room" opened on site in the Fall of 2013
- All seven parking lots were repaved from 2011 - 2013
